More than 8,000 students applying for a seat in the first-year junior colleges (FYJC) through the special round that was concluded last week, were eliminated from the round as their average percentage did not match with their preferred college cut-offs.

According to the officials at the state education department, this is not for the first time something like this is happening.

"Before every round, a vacancy list is been declared along with the updated cut off percentage list of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) colleges. Students are being told time after time to check those before preferring any colleges in the form," an official told this newspaper.

He further continued, "In the general rounds when these happened, students had a backup option of another round. But after a special round, they don't."

In this regard, DNA spoke to several students, who are worried about ending up without any seats as they fail to complete the appropriate admission process.

"I followed all the admission procedure before filling the forms and yet my name did not show up in any of the lists. I came to the education department to understand what went wrong but they told me to try in the FCFS (first-come-first-serve) round as they didn't know what was the mistake in my admission form," said Ashish Chaturvedi, a student.

Rinisha Sinha, another student who had a similar issue said, "I was told some minority quota seats were transferred in general quota at SIES College, Nerul. So I only opted for SIES College but later when the list was released, my name was nowhere found. Now I have been told to try in the FCFS rounds."

The official while clearing the discrepancy explained, "If a college has two or three seats remaining vacant and the number of students applying in that college is more than 25, how will every student be placed? Students should have mentioned some more preferred colleges as they have 10 options. However, that didn't happen, which cost these 8,000 plus seats dearly."

Dates to remember

First come first serve basis
August 21: Begins for students scoring 80 per cent and above (first category) between 10 am to 5 pm.
August 23: For students scoring 60 per cent and above (second category) between 10 am to 5 pm.
August 26: For students scoring 35 per cent and above (third category) between 10 am to 5 pm.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing FCFS round, if the students continue to choose only option the chances of they being excluded are high and will end up in the final round, meant for the ATKT students.

Students who have not confirmed seats in any early rounds can check for vacant seats on the given date and time (by the department) and apply it as per the availability. Whoever applies it first, manages to seal the seat for themselves. The dates for these will be on the basis of percentage.
