Chin up, posture stretched, an American cocker spaniel’s body shivered as the tension from the stretch prolonged. And in minutes all of it was worth it. The furry canine managed to steal the show and move over to the next round. On Sunday, over 200 dogs participated in a dog show that was conducted by Bombay Presidency Kennel Club (BPKC) at the St Stanislaus School Playground in Bandra.

The BPKC has been conducting the show since 1988. “There are 37 breeds and each is being judged by the standards of their own breed. After that, there will be a competition for the best in show,” said Sheila Naharwar, secretary, BPKC.

Among the breeds that participated were the Great Dane, Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Havanese, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Bichon Frise, and working breeds of Bull Dog, Doberman, Rottweiler among others.

“He has come to continue his mother’s legacy who won many prizes. He is very introverted right now because he does not move out so much. In some time he will be as playful and win over everyone,” said Rahul Pawale who was accompanying his Shih Tzu.

Bianca Casa Xcell was lucky. The Bichon Frise managed to impress everyone with his smooth gaite, attentiveness and shiny white fur which his owner took extra care to keep clean. “He has won many medals,” said Vinayak Shetty, the owner.

“Each are judged for their perfect movement, richness of the front leg and throw of the rear leg, their stifle (thigh) neck, chest and tail,” said Vishnu Bhave, a dog trainer.

So those who moved like they were peddling or locomotive, or oscillated their body or busy in their doing own antiques were not closer to the perfectness of the standards of their respective breeds. “Since all dogs have some faults, those who walked straight, are attentive, have a good top line and are happy are close to the standards of their breed,” said Minaz Cassum an enthusiast who was helping the organisers.

“They were all good in general. Beautiful face, silky hair, sloping topline, sweeping rear angels. The Great Danes had strong big lines, head like a brick. Doberman breed had a slopy topline which his how it should be,” said Joy McFarlane, a judge at the event.
