Through the Central government's Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, the BMC had received funds of Rs27.12 lakh from the state government, for the education of minority students. The funds were given in October 2013, for installing computers in 12 Urdu-medium civic schools in the city.

As per Rais Shaikh, the Samajwadi Party chief in the BMC, the amount was given in the interim form to the education officer of BMC in October 2013, which should have been utilised by March 2014.

In the standing committee meeting on Wednesday, Shaikh stated: "The report of work done in this regard was supposed to be sent by the education officer of BMC to the office of the deputy director of education in Mumbai. But since the BMC has failed to utilise the money to purchase the computers, the deputy director of education has demanded the funds back from the BMC in a letter dated September 12, 2014."

To this, Shaikh added that had the funds been utilised at the appropriate time, then the children studying in Urdu-medium schools would have benefited.

"But since the education department did not take any steps in this regard, several students from those schools have been deprived of this facility," Shaikh stated in a letter to the additional municipal commissioner (City) at the time, Vikas Kharge.

Shaikh demanded that strict action be taken against the officials of the education department for the delay. "The funds should once again be allotted for the procurement of computers for Urdu-medium schools. The BMC should take efforts in this regard to ensure that," he said.
