The condition of 16-year-old Monica More, who lost both her hands in a train accident at Ghatkopar station, is improving steadily. Her family members, however, said that they are distressed at the thought that their once active daughter has been rendered nearly immobile due to the accident.

Doctors at BMC-run KEM hospital, where More has been admitted in ward number 26, said she will require expensive artificial limb transplants for both her hands. The expenses for fitting prosthetic limbs are expected to roll into tens of lakhs of rupees.

“The best prosthetic limbs, which function electronically, are expected to cost close to Rs60 lakh to Rs80 lakh. We will initiate talks with two to three international suppliers to provide her the best fitting limbs,” said Dr Pradip Bhosle, head, orthopaedic department at KEM hospital.

Doctors said that they have controlled the spread of infection to other parts of the body at the moment, but the wounds are badly contaminated. “It will take another month for More to recover before a decision on fitting the prosthesis can be made. We have to acquire imported prosthetic limbs so that her basic grip, finger movements and hand functions are sustained, apart from serving the gross cosmetic functions of the limb. Wounds will have to be monitored daily for a month before zeroing in on prosthetic limbs as precise size and functions of both limbs have to be coordinated,” said Bhosle.

“We are appealing to people to approach the hospital and contribute in the charity fund so that we can acquire expensive prosthesis for her.”

More lost both her arms, a few centimetres from below her elbows, in the accident while boarding a CST-bound train from platform number two at Ghatkopar station. She lost an extensive amount of blood and, on Tuesday, her haemoglobin level had dropped to eight units.

“Transfusion of whole blood has been started after monitoring her haemoglobin level. Blood will be transfused every day until her level comes under control,” said Bhosle.

Since More’s admission on Saturday to KEM hospital, a stream of visitors has been coming into the ward to visit her. “Her diet is normal and she is talking to friends and family,” said Suchitra Shirke, More’s cousin.
