For those who have been staying at their transit homes in Saifee Burhani Park, Anjeerwadi, quietness is forbearing.

Away from the noise of constant honking of cars and crumbling construction in their Bhendi Bazar homes, the common refrain here is peace. “Life is much better. There is no noise and hygiene is of top quality. Security and lift services that were not there in our old homes are available here,” said Mariya Shabbir Jasdanwala, whose family is amongst the many who have shifted over a period of three years.

Jasdanwala and another family spoke to dna in the presence of people related to the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT), which is looking after Bhendi Bazar redevelopment.

They moved into furnished units that had a kitchen, attached toilet, carpet, cupboard, curtains, hot water geysers and a washing machine. The place has internet connections also.

Basic amenities like electricity, water and security are taken care of. If anyone wants to go in for an air conditioner or other things, s/he has to shell out some extra money. As a community initiative, the transit home also takes care of prayer halls and food. “To put it in our language, we believe in ‘Aman and Jaman’ at the same time,” quipped Aziz Abbas Ali Bohra, another person living at the same site.

“Apart from a ground for children to play, parking facility is the other thing that has helped us,” added Bohra.
