From 332 to 1,000 sq ft rooms, Manora MLA hostel set for redevelopment

The temporary arrangement for the accommodation of MLAs will be done at a state government owned building in Chembur or by availing flats on rent in Colaba.

The NBCC (India) Limited, a Navratna enterprise under the Union Ministry of Urban Development will redevelop the Manora MLA Hostel in Nariman Point and the work is slated to begin in the next two months.

The hostel rooms which currently measure 332 sq ft will be redeveloped to a sprawling 1,000 sq ft. The temporary arrangement for the accommodation of MLAs will be done at a state government owned building in Chembur or by availing flats on rent in Colaba.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at Vidhan Bhavan on Monday. Presiding officers of both the Houses Haribhau Bagade and Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar along with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, leaders of Opposition, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Dhananjay Munde, in both the Houses, PWD Minister Chandrakant Patil, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Girish Bapat and all the concerned officials including chief secretary Sumit Mallick were present for the meeting.

Chandrakant Patil informed that the redevelopment work will start in the next two month's time and Manora will be vacated for the same. Munde informed that the NBCC had quoted a 12 per cent higher estimate and that the state government should bear the cost for appointing an architect. Girish Bapat informed that there are a few options for shifting the MLAs and the decision was taken unanimously. There were no complaints about the Manora Hostel in the past few months.

Bapat informed that the revamped Manora will be able to accommodate 600 MLAs, 400 personal secretaries as well as other staffers. The hostel at present has four towers each with 84 rooms admeasuring 332 sq feet. The four towers will be razed down and a new building will be built in the next two years by the NBCC.
