In a style best described as 'filmy', tenants of a neighbouring fruit stall entered a jewellery store after digging a hole in the dividing wall, and decamped with ornaments worth Rs2.41 crore in Virar.

Ashish Thorat, the owner of Omkar Jewellers in the posh Gokul Township of Virar (W), entered his shop to find one of its walls destroyed and jewellery missing. He described the chain of events, saying: "As usual, I opened my store at 9 am and saw two large holes in the wall, along with shelves of ornaments missing. I informed the police after doing an inventory of the jewellery stolen, which was Rs2.41 crore."

Officers from Arnala police station revealed that the neighbouring shop was taken on rent two weeks ago. After the theft, the tenants fled the premises which had a meagre amount of fruits on display. Cops have taken the stall's agent in custody for interrogation.

Thorat added: "The tenants, a married couple, were very friendly. We never suspected them to be thieves, but now they are absconding."

Narsinha Bhosale, deputy superintendent of police, Vasai division said: "We have registered a case of breaking in and theft. We have got a few leads and are investigating further."
