The latest plan for Thane's Ghodbunder Road is a 4.4-km-long freeway, to be built at an elevation between Chena Creek and Ovala. However, the arterial road already has four flyovers - at Kapurbawdi, Manpada, Patlipada and Waghbil. Furthermore, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation is planning a Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Ghodbunder Road Metro rail over the route.

The elevated road, however, has been proposed for the hilly section. This is where there is forest land that falls under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and as a result widening of the road is not feasible here.More than five years ago, the Ghodbunder Road was broadened along the Ovala-Majiwada patch, as part of the first phase of road widening.According to the authorities, the freeway will help in decongesting Ghodbunder Road on the ghat section, as smaller vehicles can use the elevated road and heavy vehicles would continue to ply on the existing road. Over the last decade, this arterial road has witnessed a spurt in residential complexes and there has since been a tremendous increase in vehicular traffic, particularly on Borivli-Thane via Ghodbunder Road route."The elevated freeway will be 4.4 kms long. We are yet to conduct a study related to it. The project cost is around Rs450-500 crore for a two-plus-two-lane road," said an official from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).The MSRDC is yet to appoint a private agency for preparing a detailed project report. It has not yet put forward the project for a formal nod from the cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure. At the moment, the proposal is under consideration of the urban development department. In March 2012, MSRDC had floated the idea of a 26-km elevated road between Dahisar and Bandra at a cost of about Rs5,000 crore. The road was proposed to be along SV Road between Bandra and Santacruz, followed by a 2.2-km tunnel at Juhu Aerodrome surfacing at Vile Parle near Gulmohar Road, till Infiniti Mall in Andheri. Thereafter, it would continue to be elevated till Dahisar on Link Road. Till date, the project remains on paper.
