Freedom fighter, social worker passes away at 90

Veteran social worker and revolutionary freedom fighter Padma Bhushan Nagnath Anna Naikwadi (90) died in Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday evening.

Popularly known as krantiveer or anna, Naikwadi was admitted to the hospital two months ago with complications due to low blood supply to the brain. His body was brought to his hometown Walva in Sangli district on Thursday night.

Anna had won the assembly poll from Walva in 1985. He was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2009 and received the Doctor of letters from Shivaji University in 2008.

Anna participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942 and was a part of a revolutionary group that looted a special train in Shenoli on June 7, 1943, rifles from a police station in Sangaon village in Kolhapur on October 10, 1943, and the treasury in Dhule (April 14, 1944).

He is survived by wife Kusum, sons Vaibhav and Kiran and daughters Vishakha and Pragati.
