Mumbai Crime Branch has busted a unique racket wherein the fraudsters used to obtain details of the customers who had booked orders from a teleshopping company and deliver them chappals, stones, old books, plastic items, etc against their original order. They were operating through a cash-on-delivery model. Kishan Induprakash Singh, 25, a resident of Navi Mumbai, who is an ex-employee of the company, has been arrested.

According to the police, an application was received from the Legal Manager of a teleshopping company at DB Marg in Mumbai that the original items ordered were being replaced by inexpensive, old items. So far, 32 such incidents have taken place in the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai.

A case was registered with DB Marg police in this regard on Wednesday and the Crime Branch is investigating the case.

After registering the offense, Sanjay Saxena, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, and KMM Prasanna, Additional Commissioner, directed Bhaskar Kadam, Assistant Police Inspector and his team to work on the case and examine the transactions. Singh was arrested on Thursday from Digha Village in Navi Mumbai.

Explaining the modus-operandi of Singh, an officer said, "Singh would put random requests of 400 to 500 order numbers on the Track Your Order website of the company. If the numbers matched with the orders, he would then call at the centre of the company and obtain the name and number of the customers on the pretext of making enquiries. All this happened between the booking date and actual date of delivery. Original parcels remained with the courier company, who would later deliver the original parcel or compensate the customer in cash."
