Just days after the gang-rape of a photojournalist in the city, two more incidents of rape have left Mumbaikars wondering if the city is safe for women anymore.

On Sunday evening, a four-year-old girl was allegedly raped in Oshiwara.

The incident took place when the girl was playing at the Tukaram Omble Park in Behrambaug, Oshiwara.

The accused has been identified as Salman Hijab, 22, who works as a waiter in a catering firm. He is a native of Kolkata and had come to Mumbai three weeks ago.

According to the police, the victim, daughter of a labourer, lives in Oshiwara with her parents.

On Sunday around 7 pm, she was playing in the garden when the accused approached her and took her to an isolated place nearby and sexually abused her. He also threatened her with dire consequences if she told anyone about the incident.

However, the victim returned home and narrated the incident to her parents. The family then lodged a complaint with the Oshiwara police. “We have arrested the accused under sections 376 (rape), 363 (kidnapping) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. The victim was taken to Cooper hospital and a medical test was conducted,” a police officer said.

The report is awaited.

In another incident, a 17-year old girl was allegedly raped in Versova area of Mumbai on Sunday evening. The incident took place when the victim and the accused met each other near Nana Nani Park where the accused allegedly raped her.

While the police have registered a case in this regard, they have not made any arrests as of yet.

According to the police, the victim and the accused knew each other and they used to meet often.

“Following the victim's complaint, we have registered a case against the youth and are verifying the facts. As of now the accused has not been arrested, but we will catch him soon,” said an officer at the Versova police station.
