The Vashi police on Saturday morning arrested the Headmaster and the Head Clerk of Mount Mary English High School, Virar — key accused in the HSC exam papers leak probe — for allegedly taking a photograph of an HSC question paper and circulating it among students. An advocate and a teacher of a junior college were also arrested for allegedly sharing and circulating the question paper in different student WhatsApp groups.

Anand Ramdas Kamat, 43, Trustee and Headmaster, Mount Mary English High School, along with Ganesh Sudhakar Rane, 30, Head Clerk of the school, allegedly took photographs of the question paper and sent it to an advocate identified as Nikhil Shankar Rane, 29.

Police said that the advocate then shared the photograph of the question paper with Vinesh Ashok Dhotre, a teacher at a junior college, who also runs private tuition classes. Dhotre, in turn, allegedly circulated the question paper among various student WhatsApp groups.

Hemant Nagrale, Commissioner, Navi Mumbai police said, "They confessed during interrogation that they were directly in the paper leaks and also accepted that they were involved in other HSC question papers leaks that took place so far this year."

He added that further investigation is underway, and more people involved in the crime may get arrested. Police have got custody of the four accused till March 18.

According to sources, the exam centre code on the leaked paper, and a pair of scissors that could be seen lying next to the question paper in the photograph, helped the police to narrow down on the source of the leak and nail the accused.

Earlier, Vashi police had arrested four persons and confiscated the mobile phones of people from different parts of the city, who were reportedly using the phone to send and receive HSC question papers that were initially leaked. Of the four arrested, three were students and one a private tutor.

Kamat and Rane were allegedly arrested on the basis of a forensic analysis of these mobile phones. Those arrested earlier were identified as Rahul Bachelal Bhaskar (22), Azharuddin Kamaruddin Shaikh (20), both residents of Malvani in Malad, and Aman Mohammad Islam Shaikh (19), an HSC external student, and Suresh Vimalchand Jha (26), both residents of Kandivli.
