Real life imitated reel life on Tuesday when a fake Income Tax (IT) raid, movie Special 26-style, unfolded in Thane. The four “IT officials”, however, were nabbed within 24 hours of them making good with 10 tolas of gold from a Navi Mumbai businessman's house.

Four people showed up at Kopar Khairane resident Mangaldas Bhanushali's (48) godown in Goteghar, Shil-Daighar, around 11.30am on Tuesday. “They claimed they were IT officials and had to conduct an inquiry as Bhanushali had not paid his income tax,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Sachin Patil.

They then took the businessman's mobile phone and Rs4,700 from his pocket, and drove him in a white Maruti Ertiga to Kopar Khairane. “In the car, they demanded Rs1 lakh as bribe. They said they will be paying Rs50,000 to a senior official, so that the inquiry against Bhanushali doesn't go any further,” said Patil.

When the businessman told them that he cannot afford the amount, the accused said they will have to raid his house as well. They asked Bhanushali to give all the gold jewellery he had at home. They then took 10 tolas or 100g of gold and Rs10,000 in cash and told him that he could come to the Rabale station with Rs1 lakh and take the jewellery back. They also gave him Rs700 and his mobile phone, so that he could go back home.

Bhanushali returned home and narrated the incident to his relative Shailesh, who took him to Shil-Daighar police station. As per the cops' instructions, Bhanushali asked the accused to come near the Thane civil hospital to take Rs1 lakh. After they reached the spot, the cops nabbed them.

They were identified as Bhupendra Kanji (35), Milesh Satam (37), Praful Bhingardive (37) and Santosh Bhosale (37). They have been booked under sections 34 (common intention), 170 (impersonation), 360 (kidnapping) and 420 (cheating) of the Indial Penal Code (IPC) The gold and Rs2.72 lakh in cash were also recovered from them.
