Four firemen sustained injuries in a major fire that broke out in a chawl at the Cotton Green area on Tuesday evening. They were rushed to the BMC-run KEM hospital for treatment.
According to fire brigade officials, the fire broke out at 4.30pm at the Hirji Bhojraj chawl, a ground-plus-two storey structure comprising 40 rooms.
Eight fire engines, seven water tankers and three ambulances were pressed into service immediately and the fire was brought under control within two hours. The fire was put in the grade 2 (dangerous) category.
Deputy chief fire officer P Rahangdale confirmed that 20 rooms at the first floor of the chawl were completely gutted, though residents managed to escape injuries.
Fire officials informed that a short circuit led to the fire, which got aggravated after three consecutive cylinder blasts.
Locals informed that the chawl was supposed to go for redevelopment in a year.
