Four dead, 11 injured in road accident at Khalapur

Four construction workers died and at least 11 others were injured when a vehicle rammed into their tempo on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, at Khalapur, shortly after midnight on Sunday. 

According to the Khalapur police, the workers were travelling from Pune to Dombivli in the tempo when it suffered a puncture near Tambri village. 

Some of them were seated inside the tempo while the puncture was being repaired, when the vehicle hit the tempo. 

The police are looking out for the driver of the vehicle who immediately drove away from the spot. 

The dead were identified as Haldar Mahato, 42, Yelappa Pujari, 35, who hailed from Jharkhand, and Siddhesh Pati, 25, a resident of Dombivli. A fourth person died in hospital. 

The injured are being treated at MGM hospital in Kamothe where their condition was described as stable. The tempo driver, Ishwar Rathod, was among the injured. 

There were 19 persons in the tempo, the police said.
