On Monday evening, faces of students and faculty members of the New Sion Municipal Secondary school wore a bright and hopeful look.

The Song of Oneness Foundation based in Powai, under the banner of Sri Kalki Manava Seva Samithi, the community service wing of Oneness University, donated 75 benches and desks, and an overhead projector to the municipal school.

This Marathi and Hindi medium school is one of the many Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools in the city struggling with crumbling infrastructure. While some students sit on decrepit benches, others sit on the floor due to lack of space. Government funds are insufficient to meet the burgeoning demands.

In an event held at the school on Monday, the donation set a new beginning for a better studying experience. Principal Tripathi of the Hindi section said, "We want the children to receive education with respect. The cramped and rundown benches do little to help them study. These new benches from the foundation will last at least 10 years, and the students won't have to sit on the floor to write their exams."

Chairman of the Foundation, Balagopal Ramachandran said, "In Oneness, we don't encourage contribution out of pity. Just as the right hand reaches out to the left hand when it is hurt, our foundation believes in the spirit of contribution through the feeling of oneness."

HELPING HAND

Last month, the foundation donated 5 Braille machines to visually challenged children through a tie up with the National Association of the Blind. Members of the Foundation have also been involved in solving the water crisis in the Aurangabad region, where their work impacted lives of 75,000 villagers.
