The Oshiwara police were left in a fix while submitting an aborted foetus at Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) after Cooper hospital allegedly failed to follow a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) leading to the delay of three days for submission.

According to the police, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped two months ago from her residence in Oshiwara slum. Later the girl returned home and claimed that she had gone out with her friends and was not kidnapped. On October 22, the family members of the girl learnt that she was 1.5 months pregnant.

"On October 30, the doctors at Cooper hospital aborted the foetus and sent it for the submission at Kalina FSL. The FSL authorities refused to accept it due to the delay and technicalities. We then stored the foetus in our freezer and submitted it to the FSL on Wednesday," said Subhash Khanvilkar, Senior Police Inspector, Oshiwara police station.

Dr. KV Kulkarni, Director of Kalina FSL, said, "The samples which is sent for DNA analysis is an important evidence for court proceedings. The SOP has to be followed for collecting the evidence. The seal on the sample was not intact and we had to refuse it to collect. But we collected it a day later."

"We are enquiring about the incident," said a senior doctor from Cooper hospital.
