Forced to swim by friends, Dombivli youth drowns

A swim in a creek at Kachore village in Dombivli turned fatal for a 22-year-old as he drowned. Shockingly, his three friends who forced him to come for a swim, fled after seeing the victim drown.

Though the incident took place on April 8, Shahnawaz Jilani Shaikh's body was fished out on April 11 from near Adharwadi jail creek in Kalyan.

A resident of Patripul in Dombivli, Shaikh and his friends had gone to the dargah to seek blessings and later planned to go for a swim nearby. Shaikh was reluctant to swim, but his friends pushed him into the creek, said an official. The accused, in their statement to the police, have revealed that they took Shaikh's belongings with them and disposed it of in another area.

They have been identified as Abduljabbar Gaffar Khan, 34, Gopal Narayan Parmar, 24, and Omkar Mahesh Kangte, 30. All are jobless.

The trio has been booked under sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender) and 202 (intentional omission to give information of offence by person bound to inform) of the Indian Penal Code.

An officer from Vishnunagar police station said, "The youth's family had registered a missing person's complaint with Tilaknagar police. The next day after some interrogations, cops found something amiss and on the basis of suspicion arrested his three friends. The case was later transferred to us. The trio will remain in police custody till Monday."
