Taking it ahead from last week, here's where you can learn the nuances of Western Classical music in SoBo. Presenting Part II
Mehli Mehta Foundation
Farahnaaz Sohrab Dastur, honorary director of Education Programmes at the Cumballa Hill-based Mehli Mehta Foundation, makes a strong case for the relevance of the Western Classical musical tradition, "It teaches children (and adults) structure, focus, precision, teamwork, discipline and sensitivity. The idea of so many musicians playing one piece of music together is tremendous!" To that end, the foundation attempts to deepen the understanding of both children and adults with instrument classes, choirs, and other educational programmes. Its flagship event, Sangat Festival of Chamber Music held at NCPA every December, brings together musicians of Indian origin and extraordinary musicians from different parts of the world.
The True School of Music
Disha Jain, marketing executive at the True School of Music in Parel, underlines the importance of learning Western Classical music in a curriculum saturated with jazz, rock, and pop. "We teach music theory at all the levels; the basics of the Western Classical tradition are also taught, even though the school is focussed on more contemporary forms of music. These basics help to ground the students," she explains. The school conducts classes in Western and Indian music at various levels, including disc jockeying and music production.
Furtados School of Music
Dharini Upadhyaya, co-founder and co-CEO of the Furtados School of Music, hums a similar tune. "At Furtados, we give our students a comprehensive music education, including theory and the classical history of music." Not only does the school run a branch for aspiring musicians at Napeansea Road, it also delves into the perplexing layers of Classical Music at schools across South Mumbai, including Bombay Scottish and The Cathedral and John Connon.
