The Mumbai police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that Republic Day celebration goes off peacefully.

The event, which usually happens at Shivaji Park, is happening for the first time at Marine Drive.

The city police chief has asked his force for round-the-clock checking and patrolling. With the event to be held by the seafront, measures are being taken to ensure that nothing untoward happens via the sea route.

“We will ensure foolproof security for the parade, spectators and VIPs attending the Republic Day event. The entire area will be sanitised,” commissioner of police Dr Satyapal Singh told dna.

At a conference held on January 8, specific instruction was given to the force that regular day and night beat patrolling be carried out at Marine Drive from January 16 up to January 26, he said.

“This was to ensure that we have seaside security and that there is no opportunity for sabotage.

Also, as many flights hover over Marine Drive, we’re working with the state protocol department to decide if the area be declared a ‘no-flying zone’ till Republic Day,” Singh said.

He added that traffic on Marine Drive will not be allowed in both directions. “Our men from the Quick Response Team and Force One will be deployed. Also, drug addicts  and beggars will be evicted from the area,” said Singh.

A senior police officer said that Republic Day celebration will require high security in the wake of the fact that 26/11 terrorists had taken the sea route to enter the city.  “Our men in mufti will be armed with ultra-modern devices,” said this officer.

From Shivaji Park to new venue
In a first, R-Day celebrations will be held at Marine Drive this year. Given that 26/11 attackers entered the city via the sea, the police are keeping a close eye to ensure everything goes off well.
