We saw Mumbai come together at the Adoptathon 2014 in an attempt to seek forever homes for the city's stray animals

A section of the city opted to drop their last weekend's plans to be in the company of the ones that purr and meow affectionately. World For All, in association with the Homeopathy Education Society–Homeopathy for animals, conducted their fourth annual stray adoption drive at the Homeopathy Institute, Vile Parle, on November 22-23. This volunteer-run drive, coordinated by animal welfare NGO World For All Animal Care & Adoptions, saw about 150 indie-breed strays (both dogs and cats) put up for adoption. The event also allowed foster parents to give their pets up for adoption.
It sure was difficult to stop doting on the adorable dogs (named Snowy, Neo among others,) that were resting on cute red cushions and the kittens and cats (Pumpkin, Oreo and others,) that looked playful in their respective carriers. But what was equally heartwarming was the generosity of the people present there. A young Krishna donated Rs. 300 (the amount given to him for that day's lunch) despite knowing his sister had already donated Rs. 3,000. He told us, "I'd like to do something for these pets," and also put up a note on the wish tree (where people could hang wish notes while they donated money for the cause), which read 'I wish every pet here gets adopted'.
We saw many people adopting strays (with about 75 pups and kittens getting forever homes) but the most special adoption was that of a three-legged dog.
Ruchi Nadkarni, founder WFA, told us that while this year they didn't see a large footfall, there surely has been a change in the mindset of people, who are now more open to adopting indie-breed strays. If you weren't able to make it to the adoption drive, here's news. The WFA Adoptathon Hangover will happen in December 2014. Watch this space for more...
