If you love running and believe in 'wellness over illness', then August 15, is the day you must mark in your calander. For the very first time, the city is likely to witness a 12 hour run. With a motto "choose wellness over illness". The run is being organised by Shivaji Park Marathon Club (SPMC) and it will be called "12 Hour Run. Mumbai Ultra".

The run is based on the concept of Ultra runs or marathons that are conducted across the globe. An ultra-marathon is any race longer than the classic marathon distance of 42.195km. The Ironman Triathlon, 6693 Ultra, A Jungle Ultra and Badwater Ultra Marathon, to name a few.

The route of the run will be from Shivaji Park-Worli Sea Face-Mela restaurant and back, which would be 12km. The run will be held on Independence Day from 5am to 5pm. The permissions for the same are under process. Those running for 12 hours will be running in a loop for 12 hours.

"Our purpose of the event is to spread a message to every citizen that they can run and they should run for their health," said Pranav Mehta, member of the club and the brainchild behind the marathon. "For starters, people could run for at least 12 minutes a day. That way they will be keeping themselves healthy," said Nitin Hegde, another member of the club.

But this particular marathon will neither have any registration fee or prizes. "There will be a book that will profile all the participants, who completed running for 12 hours," said Hegde. A runner will be called a participant only if s/he completes 12 hours. Those runners, who leave midway will be termed as supporters.

The organisers believe that it is not the distance that counts but the running. "The whole idea is enjoy a good run," said Mehta.

The organisers expect around 1,000 people to be running at any given time. "We do not think that there will be more than 500 serious participants, who will complete the marathon," said Hegde. Some of the participants will be from SPMC itself, many from city and Mumbai police.

"Since it is Independence Day, there are ceremonial duties so I may or may not be able to participate. But I am looking to see that some people from the force do. I will be attending the closing ceremony as I am part of the organising team," said Dhananjay Kulkarni, deputy commissioner of police, zone 5.
