Dolphins, also known as 'non-human persons', were the subject of an event that recently took place at Marine Drive, Mumbai. On September 6, people from various fields convened to spread awareness about the dolphin slaughter that happens every year in Taiji, Japan.

The Japan Dolphin Day celebrated globally also saw India participating this year. Organised for the first time by Kresha Bajaj, Nishiki Bhavnani and Vanraj Zaveri, the planning took a couple of months with the organisers using social media to educate people about the issue.
One of the organisers, Kresha Bajaj, says, "The documentary 'The Cove' has captured the cruel practices against dolphins in great detail. That made us think and we wanted to do something about it. We got in touch with one of the representatives from the Japan Dolphin Day Global to show our support for the cause. We urged the government of Japan to take all possible action to stop the killing of dolphins."

Hundreds of people turned up at the event to lend their support to the cause. Many held out banners and slogans that said "Honk if you love Dolphins". People were asked to sign petitions, which would later be passed on to Japan.
Vanraj Zaveri, another organiser, says, "I'm a scuba diver; I'm attached to the sea world. My agenda is to make people aware about the cruelty against dolphins that is taking place in Japan and the rest of the world."
Maintaining the fragile ecological balance
Jangri Jasani, Head-Sustainability Solutions, Centre for Environmental Research and Education, says, "I got to know about this event on a social media website and I completely believe in the cause—such cruelty against sea creatures should stop, it seriously affects the ecological balance. The cause will also help people in India to take action against practices that spoil the quality of the sea world in our own country."

Every year from September 1 till the end of March, dolphins are slaughtered on the shores of Taiji, Japan.
