With an aim to celebrate 'Annapurna Din', The Food Army, a charitable group, distributed food grains to six villages in Palghar district. According to the members of the Food Army, they chose to distribute food grains in these villages because there are high infant death rates due to malnutrition.

Besides the regular collection of food grains, this year, the group is also collecting sanitary pads for the women in the villages. According to the group members, they will be creating awareness among the villagers about hygiene and disposal of sanitary pads in an eco-friendly way.

Speaking about the initiative, Rinku Rathod, founder of The Food Army, said, "Apart from food grains, we hope to supply them a year-long stock of sanitary pads. We will also be giving them incinerator machine to dispose off the sanitary napkins in an eco-friendly way. Also, these villages have more malnutrition cases. So, to improve the health of mother and child, we have taken up the initiative of distributing food grains. We have got a good response from the citizens who are coming forward to contribute."

While this is the third year of the initiative, last year the group distributed over 8,000 kgs of pulses in five villages. This year, through this initiative, they will be helping 870 families from six villages in the Palghar district.

The team crowdsourced food-grains on Friday and Saturday and will be distributing it to the villagers on Sunday, February 11. The two days collection points were all across the city. They will also be distributing cupcakes among children to celebrate Valentine's Day with them.

In the first year, they distributed thepla and cupcakes for the street children in Mumbai and villages in the outskirts of the city.
