Amidst protest marches and 'dhikkar' (shaming) rallies, followers of Narendra Dabholkar on Wednesday criticized the Maharashtra government for the not being able to track down the killers of the eminent rationalist.

Exactly a year ago, Dabholkar, who relentlessly fought to curb black magic and superstition, was shot dead while he was on his morning walk. His death prompted to state to come out with an ordinance loosely on dealing with the social evils.

His organization – Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (ANS) – organised several rallies and protests across various districts of Maharashtra, condemning government's failure to crack the case. Mumbai witnessed one such rally at Chaityabhoomi.

"We intend to do visarjan of the government at Chaityabhoomi after the dhikkar rally," said Sushila Munde, chief secretary of ANS. "CBI too has not taken any serious efforts to solve this case despite a year has passed," said Nandkishore Talashikar, another member of the organisation.

While members of the ANS were upset with no progress in the investigations, they were riled further following a media report that said the cops had sought the help of a tantrik to solve the case – something Dabholkar himself was dead against all throughout.

"We are deeply grieved that the murderers have not been brought to booked and the mastermind is not known. The government has not even tabled the report on the inquiry on police," said advocate Mukta Dabholkar, daughter of late Narendra.

She said ANS will continue the rationalist's legacy through street plays, booklets and voice of reason against violence. "The non-violent ways in which we get down to protest are important and we shall continue to do that."
