On Tuesday afternoon animal activists were shocked to find five carcasses of stray dogs, allegedly poisoned to death, in Virar. The activists suspect that they were first killed and then dumped in a secluded street.

The first such incident happened in Vasai on January 4 when nine stray dogs and at least 150 crows were found dead due to poisoning. dna had reported the incident.

Animal activists found the five dead strays on a street near Global City in Virar (West). They were found lying beside each other. They reported the incident to Arnala Coastal police.

"We got a call from a local resident and we found that the dogs were either assaulted and then poisoned. Their carcasses were lying near each other; this is a case of extreme cruelty," said Harshala Lad, animal activist.

"The stray dogs were dumped after the killing. We questioned some nearby shopkeepers for clues but they were not sure about who was behind this brutal act," said Omkar Lad, another activist.

An officer from the Arnala Coastal police station said: "We have been informed about it. We will send a team to conduct a panchnama. If we get any complaint, we will register it."
