As per the ridership statistics for the first week of Monorail operations between Chembur and Mahalaxmi, 54 per cent of the passengers is handled by five out of the total 17 Monorail stations. Chembur is the most used station followed by Bharat Petroleum station.

Nearly 2 lakh passengers had used Monorail in its first week of operations starting from March 4, earning revenue of around Rs 36 lakh.

The data of Monorail ridership reveals that out of the total 1.98 lakh passengers handled between March 4 and March 11, around 1.07 lakh passengers were handled only by Chembur, Bharat Petroleum, Mahalaxmi, Wadala Bridge, and Lower Parel station.

This also means that the remaining 46 per cent of ridership was handled by the remaining 12 Monorail stations. These include stations include Antop Hill, GTB Nagar, Dadar East, Naigaon, Mint Colony, and RC Marg Monorail station that was the least used station.

On the ridership pattern, an MMRDA official said, "Chembur Monorail station got operational in February 2014 and also acts as start and end point of the corridor. Hence, ridership from this station is almost fixed. The same logic can be applied for Bharat Petroleum."

"Similarly, for the second phase, high ridership from Mahalaxmi station can be due to the fact that it is the start and end point of the corridor. While high ridership from Wadala Bridge station is due to its close proximity to Wadala railway station, high ridership from Lower Parel station owes to that fact that it is one of the busiest business hubs in the city and its close proximity to Lower Parel and Curry Road railway station," added the officer.

The first phase of Monorail between Chembur and Wadala Monorail Depot (WMD) got operational in February 2014 and has been in news for several technical failures. Meanwhile, the second phase from WMD and Mahalaxmi got operational since March 04, 2019 after missing several deadlines.
