The Navi Mumbai police detained five persons on Monday midnight and seized new currency notes worth Rs 45 lakh. So far, Navi Mumbai police have seized more than Rs 1 crore in new currency notes after demonetization.

Acting on a tip off, the Navi Mumbai crime branch unit 3 carried out a raid at a shop in Kharghar and detained five persons. "We had information that some people were coming in Kharghar to change old currency notes with new currency on commission basis. Based on our information, we carried out the raid and detained five persons with the new currency notes," said Dilip Sawant, Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime). "We seized a total of 2,250 new currency notes. The raid was carried at PAT Infra and Agro located at Prathmesh Apartment in Sector 19 of Kharghar," he added.

The five men detained have been identified as Jaydad Vilash Telvane, 34, a milk seller and labour contractor, a resident of Kahrghar, Suresh Manji Pathak, 32, sand supplier and resident of Kharghar, Iqbal Karim Patel, 46, a decorator and resident of Panvel, Mahesh Vasant Patel, 31, a milk seller and resident of Kharghar and Juber Nizamuddin Patel, 40, a building material supplier and resident of Taloja in Navi Mumbai. They will be handed over to the Income Tax department for further investigation.
