One would think that waiting five months for exam results is a long time. But that is exactly what 49 students of SNDT University are doing as they await the result of their B Ed final year exam which they appeared for in May.

Students are clueless about why their results have not been declared yet. Some of them have lost their jobs as they were not able to produce mark-sheets or passing certificates during the approval period of companies which hired them.

The BA B.Ed students are from LJNJ Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Vile Parle, which is affiliated to SNDT University. A total of 99 students appeared for the exam out of which 50 appeared for the new syllabus while 49 appeared for the old syllabus. While 50 students have received their results, the remaining 49 are still struggling. The college is equally clueless about why the results have not been declared.

“I got a teaching job in a school based on the college’s letter which assured that I have completed the course and my results are yet to be declared. I had to submit my passing certificate for approval. I lost my job as I couldn’t submit it,” said a student on condition of anonymity. There are other students facing similar issues.

All the students had approached the college principal in August to know when they would get their results. Dr Surekha Sawant, principal of the college, said “We understand their situation but since it is a final year examination, it is conducted by the varsity. We have tried to communicate with the varsity through different means. But nobody has shown any willingness to resolve the matter.”

According to information provided by Sawant, the college has repeatedly communicated the issue to the varsity and other authorities.

Dr Vasudha Kamat, vice chancellor of SNDT University who assured an inquiry into the matter said, “I will need to check the exact status of the case, until then I would not be able to comment.”

No varsity action for far too long
A letter was first sent to the vice-chancellor of SNDT University on September 3. After receiving no reply, the college sought help from DP Sawant, minister of state for higher education on September 11. Sawant said the matter should be looked into soon.

Observing no action from the varsity, a letter was sent on October 6 to the secretary of higher and technical education department who sent a letter to the varsity to inquire into the matter and present a report in seven days.

A letter was also sent to the governor’s office to look into the matter in his capacity as chancellor of all universities in the state. He asked for appropriate action to be taken.  “Still the results have not been declared,” said Sawant, adding that the varsity had appointed a three-member committee which is yet to submit a report.
