Five Mumbai institutes featured in the overall top 100 institutes as per the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2018 rankings. The rankings were declared by Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) ranked third in the overall category, second in the engineering institutes and fifth in the management categories. Devang Khakhar, Director, IIT-B, said: "The rankings are an assessment of the work that we have been doing over the years. While we have always done enough to better ourselves, the rankings like these give an additional recognition to the work that we do."

Matunga-based Institute of Chemical Technology bagged the fourth spot in the Pharmacy category, tenth in engineering and secured an overall rank 30.

GD Yadav, Vice Chancellor, ICT said that it was a proud moment for the institute to be recognised in the top 50 institutes across the country. "As compared to other institutes, our student strength is very small and so are our research resources. However, despite this, with our research and overall performance, we have been able to make a mark in the rankings even in the area of engineering," added Yadav.

Some of the key parameters for the rankings included teaching, learning and resources, research and the perception of the institution by its stakeholders. While the Homi Bhabha National institute ranked 41st, Tata Institute of Social Sciences secured the 49th spot. Vile Parle's Narsee Monjee Institute of Management ranked 82nd. In the college category, St Xaviers college ranked 74th. The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) featured in the list of special mention for their work.

None of the Mumbai institutes made it to the list of top 100 law, architecture and medicine institutes across the country.
