The first self-financed university in North Maharashtra has been launched in Nashik by Sandip Foundation to cater for the needs of professional education.

The university, named as Sandip University, will be an autonomous educational university guided and governed by the policy, rules and regulations of Maharashtra state and under the regulations of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university will start its functions from this academic year in various disciplines.

Sandip Foundation already offers education technical education through two degree colleges, two polytechnic colleges, one pharmacy and one management college which are affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University, and has about 8,000 students studying in its campus.

Speaking about the self-financed university, chairman of Sandip Foundation Sandip Jha said, "The need today is to bridge the gap between classroom education and industrial knowledge. The course syllabus today needs to be made more industry friendly and hence Sandip University will have a board of studies that is a proper combination of academicians and industrial experts."

Jha further stated that even technical education colleges today focus more only on theory whereas all over the world this trend is changing with an equal input of practical knowledge. "To make the educational programmes more interesting to the students and useful to the work scenario, we have planned for project-based learning which will develop the aptitude of students. Our aim is to make students functionally literate."

Sandip Jha, an engineer who ventured into education, started with coaching classes in Mumbai. With a broader aim of educating students in mind, he left his government job and eight years ago established Sandip Foundation in Nashik on a 51-acre plot on Trimbak Road. Sandip Foundation takes a big leap to start the first self-financed university in North Maharashtra.

While courses in commerce, natural and life sciences, humanities and law will be offered from this academic year, courses in disciplines of design, actuarial sciences, nano technology, bio technology, cloud computing, ethical hacking, etc. will be started eventually. It will also focus on courses necessary for local industries like wine technology and sugar technology, Jha stated.
