First locomotive's engine Sultan to take Thane kids on a ride

Thanekars are in for a treat this week. On Saturday, a replica of one of the engines of the first locomotive that ran between Bombay and Thane in 1853, Sultan, will ferry children during the Vaikunth flower show that has been organised in Balkum.

In 1853, the first ever passenger train service was inaugurated between Victoria Terminus and Thane. Three engines Sahib, Sindh and Sultan, which drew the train, are now being kept at the National Railway Museum.

"The city of Thane has a rich history and we wanted to showcase one of its distinct features — highlighting the fact that the first train took off from our city, something that is often forgotten. We will also be giving information regarding the first locomotive during the show," said the event spokesperson.

"The concept is based on uniqueness — to show the variety of flowers along with the importance of Thane and its rich historical background."

A Balkum resident, Sushil Sharma, said, "We are excited that such an event is taking place in Thane. We are all looking forward to the show as well as to ride Sultan and learn more about it and the train."

"With 18 theme gardens, we decided to add a flavour of history to the show, so that children, youths and senior citizens take something important back with them, their region's history," said Dr Swati Piramal.
