The city colleges declared their first merit list on Monday for students seeking admission to the First Year Junior College (FYJC). Till now, 2.22 lakh students have applied for admission online, and it seems the Arts stream is gaining popularity over other streams.

The first merit list was declared for 1.84 lakh students, of whom 47,648 got the college of their choice, while 22,348 students got their second choice. Admissions for the minority, in-house and management quota students had started before the online process for others began. In minority quota, 21,552 students have been admitted, 9,779 in in-house quota and 1,809 in management quota. In all, 33,140 students got admission under quota.

Principal of Vile Parle-based Sathaye College, Kavita Rege, said, "Last year, the cut-off for Science was 93%. This year, it dropped down to 91%. Cut-off for all streams has fallen this year. Also, more students are going for Arts this year."

Echoing Rege's sentiments, another principal, MA Gvalani said, "Arts cut-off has gone up by four per cent this year, as compared to last year. On the other hand, commerce and science stream cut-off is more or less the same.

It seems the Arts stream is in demand among students."

Meanwhile, according to staffers of some colleges, cut-off for the science stream came down only because the number of seats have been doubled this year. For example, the cut-off at the Pace Junior Science College in Andheri this year was 93.2%, compared to last year's 95%.
