First cruise of season arrives in Mumbai

On Friday, the first cruise of the season – Viking Orion - sailed in at Mumbai. It will proceed from Mumbai on Sunday night.

Foreign tourists sailing to Mumbai are getting the 'traditional Indian experience' with the authorities putting up various cultural, entertainment and shopping experiences on the floor at the cruise terminal.

On Friday, the first cruise of the season – Viking Orion - sailed in at Mumbai. It will proceed from Mumbai on Sunday night.

On this cruise liner, there are 900 foreign tourists who are disembarking and an equal number of them will board the vessel to sail further.

"For the guests, we have made several arrangements like having an artisans bazaar for them to experience and try their hands with our rural art forms like batik printing, astrology, bangle making, embroidery, warli painting, etc," Gautam Dey, Senior Deputy Traffic Manager, Mumbai Port Trust, said.

Various group dance performances too have been arranged for the visitors. These performances include the forms of Dhol Tasha, Koli dance, Garba, Bhangra, Ghoomar, Lavani and Kathak.

This ship, which is not even a year old, started its voyage from Athens (Greece) on August 19. After having made port of calls at Israel, Egypt, Jordan and Oman, it has now docked in Mumbai. From here, it will head to Goa, followed by Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan and China.

Viking Orion, on a Asian sailing, has made its maiden call at the Mumbai port.

During this season (between September to April), a total of 44 cruises will touch base at Mumbai.

As compared to the last two seasons or years, this year, there are lesser number of ships making a halt at Mumbai. According to the figures available, last season 53 luxury passenger liners had either made port of call or turnaround operation. The year before that, 59 of such vessels had made its presence felt in Mumbai.
