Sparks from firecrackers set off a fire in a row of shops that also burned eight two-wheelers at Sakinaka in Andheri (East), on Tuesday evening.

The police said the shopkeepers were helpless when the fire broke out and spread quickly. The fire brigade which rushed to the spot managed to control the fire and put out the flames within a short time.

The incident happened at New Mhada building number 13. Eyewitnesses suggested that the incident happened while children were celebrating with crackers, when sparks apparently flew into streetside stalls, igniting some materials.

Sakinaka police have registered a complaint against the shopowners. “We have registered a complaint and the fire department will look into the cause of the accident,” senior police inspector S Danedhar said. “If the shops were illegally put up there we will take action.”
