Fire chief Nesarikar, who passed away on Sunday after battling for life for 15 days, will be given a guard of honour at the Byculla fire station on Monday morning, following which he will be cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium. According to fire officials, his relatives will be arriving from Kolhapur. His body will be kept at Nanavati hospital on Sunday night, after the post-mortem is carried out at JJ hospital.

A fire officer of the 1989 batch, Nesarikar was highly respected by his colleagues and junior firemen. He was promoted in July last year as chief fire officer by the civic body administration after he bravely carried out a fire fighting operation at Andheri's Lotus Business Park, which killed fireman Nitin Ivalekar.

On Sunday evening, as Jayashree and Siddhant, returned from the Burns Centre with other close relatives, neighbours and relatives began streaming in at the Nesarikar household to console the duo.

A fire officer said: "Jayashree did not have proper food for the last two weeks. She has become extremely weak and is still under shock."

Another official informed that as soon as the news of Nesarikar's demise broke, Jayashree fainted, after which she was brought back home. "Since Nesarikar sir was recovering, the news came as a shock to her," a fire official present at the Burns Centre said.

Dr Apurva Desai, who came to see Jayashree said, "Her BP is slightly high and she is dehydrated. Her child and close relatives should keep talking to her and not keep her in isolation as that will be harmful."

He added that while Jayashree is crying sporadically, she should be doing better in the next two days. Siddhant, however, appeared stable. A junior fire official said: "He has tremendous willpower. He was undergoing physiotherapy sessions and was on a strict diet, though hospital authorities allowed him to have homemade food."

About Nesarikar, another fire official said: "We were not expecting this. Till yesterday, he was perfectly fine, except for a mild fever. But in a day his health deteriorated so much that he left us all."

A graduate in Chemistry, Nesarikar undertook several courses on fire services. He began his career at the Andheri fire station.

Fire officials remember Nesarikar as a humble officer who was good at his job. "He had vast experience in this field and was very professional. He never carried any air about his position and attended all events," a fireman from the Andheri fire station said.
