A fire broke out on the third floor of a building adjacent to the Royal Palms hotel at Aarey Road in Goregaon (East). Although it was a huge fire, no casualties were reported, as the building was not occupied and was under renovation.

The fire broke out at around 12.30pm at the building, which is part of the sprawling 240-acre Royal Palms Estate. The fire had escalated to Grade-II status by 1.10pm. Ten fire engines and water tankers were used to douse the fire.

The ground floor of the building is an existing clubhouse on top of which an extended section for a convention hall was under construction.

“The fire broke out when some work was being undertaken on the interiors of the building. It damaged the roof and portions of a wall on the upper floor. While no structural damages have been caused to the hotel, the insulation material of the upper floors has been damaged badly,” said assistant divisional fire officer HD Parab.

Parab added that all the persons present on the floor escaped before the fire could spread. Investigations into the cause of the fire are on.

Civic officials from the building proposals department said the hotel had permission to undertake construction on up to four floors in the structure. “The fire was possibly caused by some internal welding work,” said an official.
