A day after dna revealed that an email containing a death threat had been sent to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan, the Mumbai police registered a case of extortion and threatening against an unknown person in this regard.

Mumbai police spokesperson and deputy commissioner of police, detection, Dhananjay Kulkarni told mediapersons, "The RBI Governor had received a threatening email recently, following which a preliminary inquiry was conducted by the police. The probe revealed that proxy servers were used to send the email. We are investigating the case from all angles."

A case under sections 387 (putting a person under fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion), 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and section 66 (D) (whoever by means of any communication device or computer resource cheats by impersonation) of the Information Technology Act has been registered with Cyber Crime Police Station at Bandra-Kurla Complex.

Asked whether the police have increased the Governor's security following this threat, Kulkarni refused to comment.

According to the police, the email was sent from the ID isis583847@gmail.com earlier this month. The email had stated that "I have been given money by somebody to eliminate you. If you will pay me more that I have been paid, then we can decide on it."

The police claimed that the email sender wanted to instigate the receiver into replying to the email and paying some money.

The email ID was being accessed from ten different countries including Australia, Italy, United States, Canada, Nigeria, Poland, Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong and Ukraine. The police suspect that a proxy Internet Protocol address was used to send the email. A proxy sends information through a complicated route on the internet in order to mask the original IP address of the sender.
