The collapse of two buildings in a span of three days in Bhiwandi has highlighted the problem of how people continue to stay in dilapidated buildings and administration's inability to vacate such structures.

Now, to make vacating of such structures easier, Thane's guardian minister has asked the civic body to ensure people's needs are not compromised. There are over 3,335 dangerous buildings in Thane city and more in neighbouring suburbs of Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Dombivli.

Despite notices and reminders being served by respective municipal bodies to vacate these premises, residents continue to risk their lives and stay there. Many of the residents who are tenants fear that once they vacate the buildings which is demolished or goes for redevelopment, they will lose the ownership of their homes. That they will not be given a new home/accomodation by the developer in the new structure.

Hence, guardian minister Eknath Shinde has asked the civic body to find a satisfactory solution for the residents of such buildings. "Give an ownership certificate to such tenants and if the building is to go for re-development then get an assurance from the landlord that the tenants will be accommodated in the new building," said Shinde.

During monsoon buildings collapse in Thane district like a pack of cards. Therefore, to take preventive measures, a meeting of all the civic commissioners in the district and the minister was held in Thane on Thursday.

The minister also asked the civic bodies to establish refugee camps to shift people from dilapidated buildings which needs to be vacated. "And if people are not ready to shift to these camps, then they should be given monthly rent to seek accomodation elsewhere," he said.

Buildings which are more than 30 years should undergo structural audit and those which were built fast and are 15 years old should also have their audits, he said.

Moreover, he also said that an NDRF team would also be permanently stationed in Thane. "Since it takes the team a lot of time to reach during crisis like building collapse, a permanent team should be stationed in Thane. And Thane municipal corporation will make arrangements for the team to station itself in a building at Pokharan Road," he said.

A compensation of Rs1 lakh each was also announced for those who died in Bhiwandi building collapse last Sunday where a total number of 8 people lost their lives.
