Ten months after the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the University of Mumbai has finally included the taxation system in the syllabus of third year BCom.

The decision was made at a recently-held meeting of the varsity's academic council. "The syllabus of the entire Commerce faculty has undergone some revision. In keeping with the new taxation system, we have now introduced GST in the syllabus," said Siddheshwar Gadade, Dean, Faculty of Commerce, at the varsity.

In October 2017, DNA had reported about the varsity still teaching the outdated taxation system, including various indirect taxes that have now been replaced by the GST. Several students and experts had written to the varsity, requesting MU to revise the syllabus (taxation modules). However, the varsity officials had said that such changes cannot be introduced in the middle of the year and thus continued teaching the same syllabus this year. "The 2018 batch that would begin classes from June, will get to study the revised syllabus," added Gadade.

Students said that adding GST would make the syllabus relevant. "It's really weird to study about something that is no longer relevant. All professional courses, like CA, have incorporated the changes, but the varsity has been late to do so. It is good that they have finally included it in the syllabus," said Dhwani Mehta, a final-year commerce student.
