The month-long struggle of Thanekars to get water from the Dighe dam, also known as the D-Dam, has borne results with the Railways giving permission to draw water from it.

Now, the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) water department is now planning on how much water they need to withdraw from the dam.

Last month, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had taken up the issue of Dighe Dam with the TMC and the party workers, who claimed to have discovered the age-old British era dam behind Mumbra hills, wrote to the TMC as well as the district administration. The demanded that the residents of Mumbra and Kalwa should be allowed to use water from D-Dam.

However, early this month, it was the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) which was permitted by the Central Railways (CR) to draw water from Dighe dam through tankers.

Encouraged by this, the TMC spoke to the CR to give them the permission too to withdraw water for Thanekars. "CR has agreed to allow TMC to draw water from D-Dam for next two months. This will go to a great extent lessen the hardships of Thanekars," said Sandeep Malvi, public relations officer, TMC.

The corporation's water department is deciding on the quantity of water to be drawn and its use as the water is non-potable. "If to be used for drinking purpose, then the TMC will have to treat the water and then release it for public use," said an official from the water department.

The dam was built by the British in 1912 on 18.12 acres land and is 185 meter long and 14.85 meter in height. It has a storage capacity of 135 MLD. It was built by the British when they wanted to build a rail network beyond Thane. They had brought in a lot of workers and to meet their water necessity, this dam was built. The dam located behind Mumbra hills lies between Rabale and Parsik hills and in the rainy season the rain water gets collected in it. This water lasts throughout the year and villagers from neighboring areas use the water from the dam.
