A dispute over immersion of Ganapati idol at a lake in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP) in Borivali turned violent after a group of men allegedly pelted stones at the police and few others present. A woman police constable and a civilian were left injured in the stone pelting incident that occurred on Sunday night.

Satish Rajaram Raorane, senior police inspector at Kasturba Marg police station, said, "We have been asked to prohibit devotees from immersing the idols themselves because because of the presence of a crocodile in it. There were three persons present at the spot, who were hell bent to immerse the idol and did not pay heed to the police warning. When the police tried to stop them from going in the lake, they pelted stones at the police, in which, Prajakta Dahibavkar, a police constable and Chandrakant Sutar, a civilian were left injured. Our policemen managed to apprehend one of the three culprits Sandesh Sutar, while two of his associates managed to flee."

He added, both Dahibavkar and Chandrakant sustained injuries on their legs and were admitted to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali, where they discharged after after preliminary treatment.

A police case has been lodged against Sutar and two others under sections 332, (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
