In a meeting on Thursday, Mumbai university invited teachers' and principals' unions and various student bodies for their suggestions on fee hike. The Draft Committee of University of Mumbai had done a survey and proposed a fee hike for those city colleges that had not hiked their fees since 2008.

While the unions suggested a 10% hike, instead of the earlier 25%, some student bodies opposed it saying it would burden the students. Prahar Sanghatna, NSUI, MNVS, Yuva Sena and RPI, among others, were representing students.

MNVS general secretary Santosh Gangurde said, "Instead of hike, the varsity should set up committees for securing grants for colleges from the University Grants Commission."

Chairman of Association of Non-Government College Principals T Shiware said, "We will wait for the hike proposal to be kept before the management council."
