A student of class XII committed suicide at her residence in Bhandup (E) on Wednesday evening as she was not been able to handle the examination pressure. The deceased had her Physics paper on Thursday, and allegedly fearing failure in the subject, she took the drastic step.
According to the Kanjurmarg police, the deceased has been identified as Vidya Sahini, a student of the science stream. Vidya, who lived in a joint family setup with her parents, aunt and uncle, was appearing for her Higher Secondary Exams (HSC).
On Wednesday evening, Vidya as usual went to her room for studying and locked her door, after her mother left for the market to purchase vegetables.
At 9:30pm, her mother's knocks on her door calling her for dinner went unanswered. When Vidya did not open the door, her mother called the neighbours, who broke open the door to find Vidya hanging with a dupatta tied to a hook on the ceiling.
They rushed Vidya to the nearest hospital, where she was declared dead before admission. Senior PI Nishikant Tungare of Kanjurmarg police said: “We were informed by the hospital authorities about the suicide and a team of policemen were rushed to the spot. We did not recover any suicide note.”
In their preliminary investigations, the police found that despite being a bright student, Vidya was weak in Physics, the subject whose exam she was set to appear for on Thursday.
Sr PI Tungare added: “We came to know that she was under pressure to perform well in Physics, and prima facie, this seems like the reason for the suicide.” The Kanjurmarg police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the case further.
