Inspector general of police, Konkan Region, Sukhwinder Singh has recommended that the charges against the two girls who courted controversy by posting comments on the social networking site Facebook regarding late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray be dropped.

Instead the Konkan IG has proposed departmental action against the policemen who arrested two girls for allegedly posting comments regarding inconvenience caused by the shutdown of services on Sunday, owing to the funeral procession of late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray.

"The arrest of the two girls could have been averted," said Singh.

Sources added the Palghar police have been directed to drop all charges against Shaheen Dhada, a BMS student, for posting a status on Facebook regarding Bal Thackeray and her friend Rini Srinivasan, who 'liked' the status.

The two, who were booked under Section 505(2) and Section 66(a) of the IT Act, have been out on bail.
