Several revisions have been made to the Mumbai Metro Master Plan, with the latest being to have a partially underground Wadala-Teen Haath Naka-Kasarvadavli (Thane) Metro.

The original Mumbai Metro Master Plan of 2003 had nine corridors, the two were Ghatkopar-Mulund and Hutatma Chowk-Ghatkopar routes. But in September 2009, the route was cut short instead of Hutatma Chowk to Carnac Bunder. However, in November 2010, it was decided to extend Ghatkopar-Mulund route till Teen Haath Naka in Thane.

During the end of 2009, it was planned to come out with tenders for the other project – Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Monorail of 23.75-kms, which was shelved in 2011-2012 after Rail India Technical and Economic Service recommend pushing back project for 10-15 years due to low ridership on the route.

In the last year, Teen Haath Naka-Kasarvadavli Metro too was planned and made part of the revised plan, therefore making it Wadala-Ghatkopar-Teen Haath Naka-Kasarvadavli metro.

Ghodbunder is rapidly developing and residential population too has increased manifolds in the last 10 years.

As reported by dna on October 7, World Bank has shown interest to provide financial aid to the project having an approximate cost of Rs 22,000 crore.

This 30.8-km route will be underground below LBS Road and will surface over the road for an elevated deck for the last 5-km in Thane, that is between Manpada and Kasarvadavli. It's car depot has been proposed in Ovala on Ghodbunder Road.

"On Thursday, this project will be part of the agenda of the authority meeting. If approved, it will require nod from state cabinet at a later stage, followed by tie-up with the international finance agency," said Sanjay Sethi, additional metropolitan commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and managing director of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation.
