Admitting that the recent spate of suicides by farmers in Maharashtra was a "shame", chief minister Devendra Fadnavis stressed upon the need for people's participation to help the state government in achieving sustainable farming.

He was speaking on the occasion of Maharashtra Day, which celebrates the creation of Maharashtra which was carved out from the former state of Bombay on 1 May 1960.

"Since the new government has assumed power in the state, a number of decisions have been taken for the welfare of people. These decisions are bound to help the state achieve new heights. But we need the help of people to achieve our goals," Fadnavis said.

"The prevailing agrarian crisis and farmer suicides due to crop failure are a matter of shame for the state. To change the current situation, sustainable farming is the need of the hour," Fadnavis said in his message.

Fadnavis said that maintaining law and order is a prime priority for the government, and that the conviction rate has gone up to 38% in the six months of the BJP-Shiv Sena government's reign.

He also said that 53% of the state's population is below 25 years of age. To provide youths with employment opportunities, the government has given priority to the 'Make in Maharashtra' initiative, which has been launched on lines of the Narendra Modi-led government's 'Make in India' campaign to boost manufacturing.

Fadnavis also spoke about the state's decision to exempt light vehicles from paying toll at certain toll stations and said that the proposed Right to Services Act will ensure better delivery of government services to the common man.

Meanwhile, governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao spoke about the state and Union government's efforts to provide succour to farmers affected by unseasonal rains and hailstorms.

The state government is implementing the Jalyukta Shivar Yojana under which water harvesting storage will be created in villages with the participation of gram sabhas," said Rao.

"The Make in Maharashtra initiative has been receiving an excellent response from investors. The state government is committed to further simplifying procedures and improving the ease of doing business in Maharashtra.

Following the chief minister's visit to Germany and Sweden, many companies are keen to invest in Maharashtra while major global companies such as General Electric, Volkswagen, Mercedes and others have expressed willingness to expand their base in Maharashtra," he added, stating that skill development will be a priority area for the government.

"On the lines of the Smart City Mission of government of India, the state government intends to develop theme-based smart cities in 30 towns of Maharashtra," the governor added.
