In the past seven months, 1,504 farmers have committed suicide in the state, but most of their families are still waiting for the compensation, alleged Dhananjay Munde, opposition leader in the state legislative council. He added that the NCP will stage a protest if compensation to the kin of the deceased farmers and relief to drought-prone regions are not released soon.
"I may also sit for dharna. The problem is so serious that if the aid is not given on time, then farmers will not able to sow this season," said Munde.
According to the government, out of 1,504 suicides, only 855 cases have been considered eligible. While 350 cases were disqualified, 299 are pending for inquiry. Suicide by three farmers have been reported in the Konkan region, Nasik recorded 199, Pune 23, Aurangabad 532, Amarawati 585 and Nagpur recorded 162.
Munde criticised the government saying that it is not serious about the issue. "In 2014-15, 45 lakh farmers paid Rs250 crore as premium for their crop insurance, but the government had not made any provision for them in the state budget. Neither is there any policy to help the drought-prone region. This government has completely forgotten the farmers and their plight. The monsoon is round the corner, but the farmers are still waiting for relief," Munde pointed out.
