Fare structure of the much-touted 'roll on roll off' (RoRo) services to carry passengers and vehicles from Ferry Wharf (Bhaucha Dhakka) in Mazgaon to Mandwa in Raigad district will be finalised by the next week. The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), which is executing the project, has said that the fares for RoRo services will be decide by a private operator because that it is their business proposition.

Vikram Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, MMB, said, "We are expecting the operator of the ferry to submit the fare structure for the ferry services between ferry wharf and Mandwa in the next seven days and we will approve it, accordingly. We have no idea of the fare structure, and it will be known only after the operator submits it for approval."

Kumar added, "We plan to open the services by the end of May, once the fare structure is decided. Commute won't be an issue in monsoons either, since the ferry services will be operational round the year. Only during harsh climatic conditions the services may be stalled."

The Rs 150 crore project was being jointly implemented by the MMMB, Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The ferry services will be able to carry around 350 passengers and 40 cars at a time.

The travel time between Ferry Wharf and Mandwa will be around 20 to 30 minutes, and Alibaug will be just around 30 minutes away by road therefrom. Further, these RoRo services will also shorten travel time between Mumbai and Goa, if one takes the highway to Goa from Mandwa. Currently, reaching Mandwa via road takes around 4 hours.
