Milantirtha Club in New Panvel will organise an adaptation of the famed Poush Mela in the node so as to keep alive the tradition of the annual fair that was first started by Debendranath Tagore. The fair will be organised with a plethora of food stalls on January 17 at the club's community centre.

With Makar Sankranti bringing a slew of festivities for many communities in the city, festive mood is high and palpable. For the feisty Bengalis, it is Poush Sankranti and the community worships goddess Lakshmi for prosperity. Though the tradition is to prepare a variety of sweets and savouries, these days, it is rare to find people who showcase similar enthusiasm. Thus, with an aim to help people enjoy the delicacies and encourage them to take time for the old traditions, the fair is being set up.

"We can never forget the time when our mother and grandmother used to make sweets for special occasions. The taste and the memory will always stay with us throughout our lifetime. Since, it is enriching, we want to encourage people to devote time for such traditions," said Dipankar Chakrabarti, adding that the purpose is also to let people enjoy select dishes from the ocean of Bengali cuisine.

People who yearn for the authentic taste of items made during this festive season can drop in at the mela. "Varieties of pitha, payesh, pati sapta, sandesh and malpua are some of the special dishes that have been decided. We will have a total of 10 to 12 stalls at the venue," said Chakrabarti, adding that all the items will be sold to people at a nominal price. He also said that ladies who wish to put up a stall are welcome as not all the stalls have been sold.

Moushmi Bala, head of the women's wing of the club said that there are both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items that people can look forward to. Most of the dishes will be prepared by members of Milantirtha "Apart from googni, nolen gurer payesh, samosa, kachori to aromatic Chinese and Mughlai, one will be able to choose from many options. Chicken lollipop, fish fry, cutlets, kosha mangsho are some of the meaty delights," said Bala.

This is the sixth year of the festival and the organisers expect it to be a hit among residents this time too. It is open to all the residents of Navi Mumbai who are food lovers. The event will continue from 6pm to 10pm.
